Redskins drop season opener to the Steelers 38-16

The 11th and final play was a 29-yard touchdown catch by Antonio Brown, after head coach Mike Tomlin made a decision to go for it on fourth and one. "But, you know, anytime you can get those balls back, it's huge".

"We'll continue to ride with him".

But remember who's missing: Martavis Bryant is suspended for the season, Le'Veon Bell is missing for three games and Lardarius Green is on the PUP list and his contribution for 2016 is in question. "I was running through a lot of holes tonight".

Planting highly paid free agent defensive back Josh Norman on the right side of the defense on every play, allowing the Steelers to simply send all-universe receiver Antonio Brown (126 yards) somewhere else, was as deceptive as going hunting wearing a cowbell. At least that was the prevailing thought when Washington got Norman to put pen to paper in the offseason.

Gruden was sticking to the script-articulated in the run-up to the game by Barry-that it would have been too much to have Norman shadow Brown because of how much the Steelers like to move Brown around. "We've said it, I remember, since the spring, that there's only one football to go around and my job is to be a good distributor, get the ball in their hands and let them see what they can do".

RED-ZONE D: The Redskins got inside the red zone five times and came away with one touchdown and three field goals. Tomlin said he'd have more information Tuesday.

"My message was, 'Well, we've got Sammie Coates and Eli and all the tight ends and DeAngelo Williams.' We have guys that can make plays and they showed it". This is no hot take, the Steelers were down a few weapons and Brown is the best receiver in football.

On a third-and-3 in the third quarter with the score 17-6, Roethlisberger again hooked up with Brown for a 26-yard score that all but sealed the win.

"Great throw by Ben", Brown said.

"That was the call", Tomlin explained afterward in matter-of-fact fashion. They drove 73 yards on 13 plays.

LOSING BALANCE: The Redskins passed 43 times and attempted only 12 runs. They were 5-for-5 in the first half on third- or fourth-and-1, putting together a late second-quarter drive that flipped the game.

"They opened up the guys in the secondary at at the end of the day you're pretty much just preventing everything", Norman said. The Redskins will rely on Matt Jones to be their No. 1 back for the first time, but he's coming off a separated left shoulder.

Week 1 made it clear that Washington was in need of some answers in its defensive front seven, and while Jenkins may be entering the twilight of his career, his track record suggests he will have a positive impact on the Redskins' atrocious run defense.

"They gave us a good old-fashioned butt-whooping". But the prevailing feeling after both affairs - that the Redskins had the chance to take down a superior opponent at home and make a statement to the rest of the NFL that they have in fact taken a step up in the league, yet couldn't do it - will be pointed out by the pessimists.
