Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer was on the Big Ten teleconference Tuesday afternoon to provide some updates on the Buckeyes and preview their upcoming game against IN, set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday IN Columbus.
Considering the number of receivers who had already played for OSU this season and the fact Meyer had said the same thing during Sam Hubbard and K.J. Hill’s redshirt seasons and not played them, this was met with some skepticism.
Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin, left, grabs a touchdown pass over Rutgers defensive back Blessaun Austin during the first half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio. Tossing 59 touchdowns through less than three years of action with the Buckeyes sums up his time with OSU quite nicely. That’s more than enough to draw the attention of offensive-minded IN coach Kevin Wilson, whose team comes to Ohio Stadium on Saturday. That’s what I take from Earle Bruce, and I’d like to think that maybe some day somebody looks back at our program and says they must have learned that from Coach Bruce.
Nick Bosa, Robert Landers, and Tyquan Lewis registered sacks against Rutgers and limited the Big Ten’s leading rusher to 40 yards.
Barrett’s performance against Rutgers moved him into 10th place all time for career passing yards. In the other half, teams like Rutgers, Illinois, Penn State and Purdue are sputtering to stay afloat early in the year. He finished with 154 total yards. Before Saturday, OSU had forced 11 turnovers (nine interceptions, two recovered fumbles) and had scored four defensive touchdowns.
For the game, Ohio State outgained Rutgers 669-116. “Even if you struggle a little bit”. Make no mistake about it, however, 6-7 was a step in the right direction. As a result, they had to replace eight starters on defense, a renovation project HGTV might have scoffed at.
“It’s surreal”, Barrett said. That included seven straight touchdown drives. Since the 2014 season, Barrett is tied with Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes in that category at the FBS level, with four more than heralded Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
“Despite everything I’ve been though, it feels surreal”, said Barrett of breaking the school record for TD passes.
Undaunted it appears, Ohio State has reloaded with perhaps more athleticism and speed than its predecessor from a year ago. “You know, we’ll just kind of see how it goes for him”. “I was really proud of the defense for that overtime one-two-three stop there”. I didn’t know coming into the game I was about to break the record. “I’m just grateful for it”.
Losing the Big Ten’s top passer Nate Sudfeld and top rusher Jordan Howard to injury in a one touchdown defeat to Ohio State and a double OT loss to MI also in front of the Hoosier faithful.
MI (5-0, 2-0) took a 7-0 lead with 14:56 remaining in the first half on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Khalid Hill, which capped off an 11-play, 77-yard drive that took 4:41 off of the clock. For the Buckeyes, this is especially true against the resurgent Hoosiers.
The fifth-year senior had back surgery last week and it’s not certain if he would be able to return at the end of the season if IU was to qualify for postseason competition.
There are better spots to test the Buckeyes’ defense than downfield.opposing quarterbacks are just 2-for-19 for 58 yards and four interceptions on passes 20-plus yards downfield this season.
Ohio State prepares for IN next, as the Hoosiers are coming off a major upset over Michigan State. “They’re first basically in every offensive and defensive stat in the conference”, Wilson said. Will it be a good game between two really good teams? This means that, at this time, these ten teams are good.
