– The game started about as well as it could have for the Packers offense, as they drove 75 yards on 16 plays and capped it with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson.
While Nelson, Cobb, tight end Richard Rodgers and running back Eddie Lacy still played the bulk of the snaps, the Packers changed up their personnel on almost every snap.
Packers running back Eddie Lacy gained 81 yards on 11 carries but couldn’t finish the game due to an injured ankle. Nelson dropped a Rodgers’ pass on the next play, which the Giants intercepted on the deflection. That 2-yard touchdown reception gave Green Bay a 7-0 lead near the 6:20 mark of the first quarter. On third-and-10, Rodgers hit Cobb for a gain of 13.
Perhaps the best part of the Packers’ defense against Manning came when a pair of rookies teamed up for one of the biggest plays of the game.
That theme of running the ball was very key – 147 yards on the ground, compared to just 43 for NY. That’s when quarterback Eli Manning had a wide-open Will Tye on a seam route behind Packers linebacker Jake Ryan for what should have been a 61-yard touchdown, but they could not connect.
– The Giants scored their lone touchdown on their next possession, with Eli Manning throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to Odell Beckham Jr.
Randall Cobb was the Packers’ most consistent receiver with nine catches for 108 yards.
Beckham finished with five catches on 12 targets for 56 yards in a 23-16 loss to Green Bay. “I’ve only started two games before”, Taylor said. Rodgers finished with 259 yards passing 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Nelson’s five TD catches in the first four games are tied for the fourth most in franchise history, trailing only Don Hutson (seven in 1942, six in 1945) and Bob Mann (six in 1951).
Later on that drive, the Packers faced a third-and-1. At the end of the night Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Micah Hyde, and rookie Kyler Fackrell all registered a sack against the two time Super Bowl champion. Then just before kickoff, second year corner Damarious Randall was ruled out because of a groin injury, forcing untested LaDarius Gunter into the starting lineup. And they did it while being saddled with poor field position throughout the game.
Rodgers, meanwhile, was amazed by how much time his line afforded him on a night when he made several great throws but also had multiple misfires that contributed to an uneven performance.
It turns out that you can’t thrive with a mediocre (at best) offensive line. Tretter has been solid in the middle, and he was vital to the Packers’ success against the Giants. He didn’t throw an interception but coughed up a critical fumble in the second quarter.
The Giants cut it to 17-9 with 5:26 left in the third quarter on a 30-yard field goal.
Capers put so many players in coverage he practically begged the Giants to run the ball.
Mason Crosby made it 17-6 just before halftime with a 44-yard kick. This is the first time in 2016 that a quarterback didn’t burn the Packers secondary for at least 260 yards. Against two premier pass rushers who are getting paid a lot of money, we did a good job.
“It’s good always when you get into a groove, it always makes it easier on the offense and the ability to get after them in the run game and also the pass game be sturdy and keep Aaron clean that’s huge it fires us up, you saw it with the Rip play and you saw it with Aaron, Aaron’s talking about it at the end of the game about how happy he was”. “I think he’ll be excited to get out there and play again”, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said.
