Five Things We Learned vs. Rutgers

Barrett has 59 TD passes in 27 career games for Ohio State (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten).

But before attention gets fully turned toward the next matchup, let’s talk about what we learned from Ohio State’s shutout of Rutgers.

Barrett has accounted for 17 touchdowns and helped the Buckeyes finish with 669 total yards last week against Rutgers. It allows head coach Urban Meyer to get the most out of his receivers, as he can rotate a lot of players every game.

Offensive star: Barrett threw four touchdown passes to four different players.

It doesn’t matter if disaster strikes on the first pass of his first-ever spring practice or the first series of multiple 2016 games. Barrett will certainly not be done there; he’s on pace to surpass Joe Germaine for third-most career passing yards in school history by season’s end and to break his own mark for the most touchdown passes in a single season.

-DL Nick BosaOhio State’s defensive line is so talented with a number of quality players that it dilutes the statistics and makes it hard for opposing offense to find a weakness.

Even a perfectionist like Meyer couldn’t find much to criticize in the way OSU played. Meyer will have his chance to show off his two Heisman hopefuls against IN at home next Saturday, and then will have the chance to get the Buckeyes another statement win, as they travel to Madison to face a stout Wisconsin Badgers defense. I think it’s safe to say the Darrell Hazell era won’t be making an appearance in 2017.

Ohio State did all that without producing a turnover for the first time this season.

“They nearly beat us last year, so we didn’t really expect it to be an easy game at all”, Hubbard said, noting that IN could have the best offensive line the Buckeyes have faced this year. He was 0/4 and only rushed for 14 yards.

For many athletes, Jenkins said the transition can be hard.

Ohio State junior running back Mike Weber entered the game two yards behind Rutgers junior running back Robert Martin for the highest average of rushing yards per game but finished it with a substantial lead. In rushing, Devine Redding ran for 100 yards in 19 carries while Tyler Natee added 38 yards in 10 carries.

“There is always competition on a daily basis”, said Buckeye linebacker Raekwon McMillan.

The Buckeyes counter with a defense that has allowed an FBS-best 9.3 points per game.

J.T. Barrett is still writing his legacy at Ohio State but, barring a tragic setback, he will be the school’s most prolific quarterback once he leaves.

Another week, another “good” game for Ohio State’s quarterback. Curtis Samuel and Noah Brown have combined for 494 receiving yards and eight touchdowns while Dontre Wilson has 12 receptions. A 16-yard touchdown catch by tight end Marcus Baugh made it a 23-0 game and put Barrett at the top of OSU’s career touchdown pass list.

The Buckeyes showed little rust in their first game since September 17, building a 30-0 halftime lead. And it only got worse in the third quarter, when OSU rolled up 202 yards more and held Rutgers to 5 yards. He had a 46-yard scoring run 2 1/2 minutes into the second half. After four games, he has 495 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Griffin Oakes missed a 35-yard field goal in overtime, only to get a chance to win it again from 20 yards out after the Spartans committed a leaping personal foul penalty trying to block the first kick.

“They smothered us”, said Rutgers coach Chris Ash, who was a defensive coordinator for Ohio State the last two years.

Between that and the speed at which play calls are coming in – a few series in Oklahoma notwithstanding – the Buckeyes’ offense is running at peak efficiency right now.
