Google presents its new smartphone: Pixel

The price action in AAPL stock suggests the same as investors have largely ignored Google’s foray into the high-end handset market. However, the Google Pixel has a smaller screen size of 5 inches with Full HD resolution while the Pixel XL has a larger screen size of 5.5 inches with QHD resolution. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Google phone partners must’ve been caught offguard after Google chose to go on its own. When Google announced the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P a year ago, the company took full ownership of the phone. So far this is all pretty much what you’d expect from a premium phone, as well as the fingerprint scanner and multiple colour options (though we’re a bit miffed Really Blue is USA only), but what Google hopes will really set the phone apart is the camera. A unusual decision when the affordable Nexus range was so successful.

This isn’t anything particularly new, of course – in fact, all of this functionality was previously present in some form or another in features like Google Now or Now On Tap.

A visitor tries out an Apple iPhone 7 on the first day of sales of the new phone at the Berlin Apple store on September 16, 2016 in Berlin, Germany. According to Raja Lahiri, partner Grant Thornton India LLP, it is too early to say if the Pixel launch would really shake up the market as Pixel has to prove itself in the real world.

“GOOG’s past attempts at hardware (Nexus, Chromebooks, Glass, Nest, etc.) have not amounted to much and given their track record, we are not going to give them the benefit of the doubt on any hardware efforts until we see otherwise”. Pixel features a Sensor Hub processor along with a finger print sensor. Google oversaw the design and hardware aspects rather than outsourcing the production to companies such as LG and HTC. That said, the Pixel does have a very similar shape with nearly like-for-like rounded corners. Both have full metal bodies, aside for the top third at the back, which is covered by a glass panel.

The Pixel devices are available for pre-order today at $649 in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany and Australia.

Fans will be pleased that the iPhone 7 models are now waterproof with an IP67 rating meaning you can dunk them in up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. Osterloh proudly showed how one can twist the phone mid-air to activate the selfie-camera.

The technology giant describes the Android-running Pixel phone, a successor to Nexus, as “the first phone made by Google inside and out”.

To paraphrase a certain soup-slinger: No Assistant for you!

The Pixel camera comes with unlimited full-size storage on Google Photos. It knows which airport you need to reach and it knows where you are by scanning for your location.

Apple’s A10 Fusion chip is hands down the fastest in a smartphone to date and wiped the floor with the competition in our benchmarks despite the 2GB RAM quota.

Then there was the way Google pitched the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P to consumers.
