Packers show they can dominate line of scrimmage vs Giants

Oh, for the good old days.

All week long, the Green Bay Packers spoke of the New York Giants’ wide-receiving trio of Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard with respect.

Manning has to put the running backs in better position to succeed, as well. While this does not always fall directly on the quarterback but on the offensive line, it just shows how disjointed the Giants are at the moment.

Rodgers threw two interceptions in a game for the first time in almost a year.

The run defense made it four straight outstanding efforts, holding the Giants to 43 yards on 15 carries, a 2.9 yard average. “I think we’re the best team in our division, even though we sit at the bottom”. While the Packers did manage some big passing plays – namely Rodgers’ 29-yard hookup with Davante Adams midway through the second quarter – the offense largely sputtered in a fashion reminiscent of its performances in Weeks 1 and 2.

So what, exactly, has been the problem with the pass protection? Our pass game needs to improve, whether it’s depth of routes, whether it’s spacing stair steps, the quarterback sitting in there making accurate throws – we need to finish some throws and come up with some contested plays.

That was never more evident than Sunday night, when Rodgers and the offense once again struggled to find a rhythm.

Randall Cobb took a hard hit at the end of the Packers’ game against the Giants.

A run defense that was already No. 1 in the National Football League through Week 4 allowed just 43 yards on 15 attempts. Manning has not missed a start for the Giants since being promoted to the job in his rookie season back in 2004, but he’s also had his share of nicks along the way. Still, the Giants sputtered.

If you love Mason Crosby field goals, he had three of those. Green Bay accomplished just that Sunday night against the Giants, with Rodgers seemingly having forever and a day to wait in the pocket on every passing play. “It’s tough. The Mondays are tough”. We communicated well together.

It turns out that you can’t thrive with a mediocre (at best) offensive line. And they came out of the gates fast a year ago as well before crumbling and failing to make the playoffs.

After the Giants cut it to a touchdown game late, Trevin Wade slipped in coverage to allow Cobb to catch a 13-yard pass on third-and-10 to lead to the two-minute warning. It was Manning’s first touchdown throw since the first half of the Washington game. And we were able to play very good red-zone defense.

Fun was in short supply for an offense that gained 219 yards all night in the latest disappointing performance in a season that’s seen little else from the group that was the Giants’ biggest strength a year ago. It was Jenkins’ first two-interception game since his rookie season with St. Louis, when he had two against Arizona on November 25, 2012.

“Just in these last two weeks, obviously last week, went against a really good defense in Minnesota and this week, again, against a good defense, they had a good plan and executed it well”. Eli Manning seems a little off.

“We’ll get noticed somewhere down the road”, Perry said. The search for an explanation could include a change in play-calling, perhaps from McAdoo to offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan.

Make no mistake, the search for a fix is on.

The cold reality is that Manning has been an $18 million middle-of-the-road quarterback for much of the past four years, incapable of carrying his team to a single notable victory. The cornerback had two first half interceptions, part of a night where he also added a tackle as the Packers simply stopped throwing towards him. Now only if the rest of the team would follow suit, as the Giants have now lost three in a row after starting the season off 2-0.
